The fate of the beloved Northern Irish crime drama Blue Lights has been thrown into doubt after it wrapped up its fourth series on BBC One.
It was confirmed after the season four finale aired last night (3 November) that series co-creators Declan Lawn and Adam Patterson – both former investigative journalists – would be stepping down from the show, with Lawn sharing a statement on Instagram.
“As Helen says in tonight’s finale: ‘In life change is inevitable. But there’s the kind we make and the kind we endure. And I like to think that between these walls we made more than we endured,’” he wrote.
“It has been a massive privilege to tell these stories, many of them drawn from real life people who shared their experiences with us. Thanks to them, to everyone who made the show, and to everyone who watched and supported Blue Lights over the last four years. End of shift!”
Blue Lights, which debuted on BBC One back in 2023, followed the exploits of three rookie police officers: Constable Grace Ellis (Siân Brooke), Constable Annie Conlon (Katherine Devlin), and Constable Tommy Foster (Nathan Braniff).
It received huge praise over its run for humanising the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and sparking national conversations about the legacy of the Troubles.
Lawn and Patterson subsequently confirmed their exit in a statement provided to Radio Times, explaining that they had “decided to step away from Blue Lights to focus on other projects including our next BBC show D-Notice”.
There remains, however, a possibility that the show would continue in some form, with the BBC currently discussing Blue Lights’ future with the show’s producers, including co-creators and exec producers Stephen Wright and Louise Gallagher.
“We are taking a beat and talking to the producers about what’s next for Blue Lights,” a spokesperson for the corporation told the outlet.
Meanwhile, Wright and Gallagher confirmed: “We wish Declan and Adam every success for the future and thank them for their dedication and commitment to the series over the last four years. We are talking to the BBC about what’s next for Blue Lights.”
Casting doubt over the possibility of a continuation are a number of social media posts from the series’ cast members, which seemed to convey an air of finality to their work on the show.

Devlin shared Helen’s quote from the finale, alongside a message for her character that read: “Annie – Thank you for the good the bad and the ugly. Thank you for loving her just as much as I did.”
“What a ride!” wrote Brooke, sharing a photograph of her character’s ID badge.
Braniff, meanwhile, told followers: “Yo yo yo guys. My last Blue Lights post ever… maybe. Few important things I need to say. To @declanlawn @two_cities_tv @gallagherfilmsni thanks for this tremendous opportunity, it was a childhood dream to be in a show like this.
“ To Marty Mccan, @brooke.sian @katherinebdev I wouldn’t have had as much fun if it wasn’t for these OGs – we’ve shared the maddest experiences and become mates for life. To every single person who worked on this show, what an experience – thank you all. And lastly, to young Tommy Foster, the stars aligned for us on this one, I hope I see you again soon.”
Blue Lights is available to stream on iPlayer.
