Kota Kinabalu: A boat crew abandoned their vessel and fled ashore after being approached by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) southwest of Mengalum Island.
Sabah and Labuan MMEA Director First Admiral (Maritime) Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali said the boat was intercepted at about 4.30pm, with an inspection uncovering diving equipment and about 80kg of fish.
Preliminary checks indicated that explosives may have been used to catch the fish.
The boat, equipment and catch, valued at about RM45,000, were seized and taken to the MMEA jetty in Sepanggar, while the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985.
