The crime index fell by 111 cases during the festive period, aided by increased public use of the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol application.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Volunteer Smartphone Patrol application helped lower the crime index during this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period. Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the index fell by 111 cases.
It dropped from 858 cases during Op Selamat 24 to 747 cases during Op Selamat 26. He said Op Selamat 26 reflected increased collaboration between police and the community through the VSP.
The number of complaints made through the VSP rose from 80 to 150 during the same period. The balik kampung notification module also saw a surge from 8,036 submissions to 16,889.
The use of the panic button increased from five to seven cases. Police visited 61,122 vacant houses and carried out 31,636 Mobile Patrol Vehicle rounds during the operation.
“The positive trend in the crime index assisted in making MPV patrols and visits to vacant homes more comprehensive,” Mohd Yusri said in a statement.
As of March 30, there were 1,705,852 VSP members. This shows increased public awareness and cooperation with police in crime prevention.
Mohd Yusri said PDRM will continue to strengthen crime prevention strategies. This will be done through patrolling, enforcement, and community engagement.
