Critically endangered newts released into wild at secret location in Spain

Critically endangered Montseny brook newts have been released into the wild in Catalonia after being bred at Chester Zoo in the UK.

Found only in a small area of north-eastern Spain, the species is threatened by habitat loss and declining water levels, with only around 1,000 believed to remain in the wild.

Conservationists have improved breeding success in captivity and hope the carefully monitored releases will help secure the future of one of Europe's rarest amphibians.
