A DAP lawmaker has come forward to defend Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing following growing criticism over the serving of alcohol during a Tourism Malaysia event, insisting that the issue has been blown out of proportion for political gain.

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng described the backlash against Tiong as politically motivated, arguing that the minister’s actions were both transparent and fiscally responsible. He explained that the gala dinner linked to the Global Travel Meet (GTM) had been taken over by private industry players who saw an opportunity to build business partnerships and attract foreign investment.

Lim said Tiong’s decision to allow this handover helped reduce government expenditure while keeping the event aligned with its purpose of strengthening Malaysia’s tourism network globally. He emphasized that those accusing the minister of misconduct were ignoring the realities of managing a global industry that must accommodate diverse cultures and expectations.

According to Lim, critics were using the controversy to push narrow-minded political narratives rather than focusing on real economic development. He warned that such rigid mindsets could damage Malaysia’s tourism potential by alienating international partners.

He urged the public and political leaders to move beyond what he called “political theatre” and return to the real task of promoting Malaysia as a competitive destination. The nation, he said, needed leadership that prioritizes results over noise.

However, not everyone agreed with Lim’s stance. Amanah Youth leaders argued that since the event was held under Tourism Malaysia’s name, it remained an official government function — and therefore should have adhered strictly to official protocol prohibiting the serving of alcohol. Penang Amanah Youth chief Khairul Ali demanded a formal apology from both the ministry and event organizers, along with clear guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In response to mounting criticism, Tiong clarified that while Tourism Malaysia initially handled the planning, the private sector later assumed control of the dinner. He stressed that the aim was to encourage international tourism partnerships and generate business opportunities rather than host an official government celebration.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over cultural sensitivity, government accountability, and the balance between national values and global business practices.
