Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing and his ministry following the controversy over alcohol being served at a Tourism Malaysia dinner, stressing that such actions must never recur.

The issue emerged after images circulated online showing guests and officials, including the minister, holding glasses of wine and beer during a dinner linked to the Global Travel Meet programme. The incident sparked criticism, as alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited at official government functions under existing regulations.

Anwar dismissed the ministry’s explanation that the alcohol was served only after the official portion of the event had concluded. He maintained that the justification was unacceptable because the gathering remained part of the same function and was held at the same venue. The Prime Minister reiterated that the government holds a clear and consistent policy on this matter — alcohol must not be served at any official event, under any circumstances.

He stated that a stern warning had been issued to both the minister and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), emphasizing that excuses of timing or context would not be tolerated. The Prime Minister said the occurrence reflected a lapse in judgment and a disregard for established protocol, which he insisted should not be repeated.

Speaking to Bernama and RTM after sending off Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Bunga Raya Complex, Anwar underscored that the entire government machinery — from Cabinet members to senior officials — must take this directive seriously. He reminded them that the administration’s image depends on discipline, adherence to policy, and respect for cultural sensitivities.

He also urged all ministries and government agencies to exercise caution and accountability in organizing public events, noting that small acts of negligence could easily be exploited and damage public confidence in the government.

The controversy surrounding the dinner has sparked debate over the standards of conduct expected from senior government figures, particularly when representing Malaysia at high-profile or international functions. Anwar’s intervention signals his administration’s intent to uphold consistency, ethical conduct, and respect for official guidelines across all ministries.
