Kota Kinabalu: Authorities may impose the maximum penalty on a 46-year-old Croatian tourist who scaled Mount Kinabalu without a valid permit, said State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin (pic).
Sabah Parks has lodged a police report over the matter, with joint investigations underway alongside the police.
The climber, identified as Mauro Persic, reportedly entered the mountain using an unofficial route before he was found injured and brought down in a search and rescue operation.
Jafry noted that any action would be decided once Persic recovers, as he is currently undergoing medical treatment.
Reminding tourists to adhere strictly to climbing regulations and designated routes, the Minister confirmed Sabah Parks had verified the climber did not hold an official permit.
