More than 1.1 million people attended Berlin's Carnival of Cultures over the weekend, organizers said on Monday, with crowds gathering to celebrate the German capital's diversity with music, food and drink from around the world.

Around 770,000 people turned out to watch the parade on Whit Sunday, where more than 60 groups gave music and dance performances, while some 390,000 attended the carnival's street festival.

Founded 30 years ago, the weekend event in Berlin's Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg districts is one of Germany's largest street festivals.

For the first time this year, the festival's organizers appealed for donations to help cover the costs of security teams, sanitary facilities and cleaning, saying funding from the Berlin Senate was no longer sufficient.

"The 30th anniversary has also highlighted how a lack of assurances from politicians and the administration is making it increasingly difficult to organize events of this scale," they said.

According to the carnival's website, just under €30,000 ($34,900) of the target €85,000 has been raised so far.
