LAHAD DATU: The Sabah Labour Department will intensify efforts to raise awareness about forced labour and human trafficking.
Its Director, Wan Zulkifli Wan Setapa, said these programmes aim not only to educate the public but also to ensure that workers know their rights.
Forced labour includes not just physical work but also cases where wages are withheld. Despite explanations, some employers still refuse to pay workers’ salaries.
“Workers can lodge complaints with the department, and we will protect their rights even if they lack complete employment documents,” he said.
Wan Zulkifli spoke during the Community Awareness Outreach Programme on Combating Human Trafficking and Forced Labour at Masjid Nurul Ibadah, Kampung Teck Guan, officiated by Datuk Mizma Appehdullah, Segama Community Development Leader.
Over the past five years, the department has recovered nearly RM100 million in unpaid wages through enforcement actions and public complaints. In 2024 alone, RM38 million was secured from various sectors.
Mizma highlighted concerns over forced labour involving children in plantations and overseas job offers promoted on social media. Many are lured by high salary promises abroad, which are often tactics used by trafficking syndicates.
“These programmes are vital to help villagers recognize and avoid misleading offers. I hope they will be expanded to reach more people,” she added.
