Kota Kinabalu: Customs seized 9,000 cases of beer with duties unpaid worth RM1.56 million at Sepanggar Port, last Friday.

Sabah Customs Deputy Director Julaiman Soimin said scanners managed to pick up outlines of the stacks of Cool and Tiger brews packed in three containers.

“We suspected something amiss when the weight of the contents did not tally as to what was declared (other items).

“When opened, the containers seemed to have been loaded with tissue papers but closer examination revealed otherwise,” he told reporters, Friday.

Julaiman said the overseas culprits had attempted to dodge RM910,000 in taxes although no arrests have been made as investigations continue.

“This modus operandi is prevalent all over the country. Trained officers are able to detect clues with ease.

“But thanks to the G0overnment for recently upgrading our scanners at Sabah Ports, the task has become much easier,” he added.
