PASIR PUTEH – A 49-year-old cutting board maker was detained by police on Monday to assist investigations after he was believed to have committed an indecent act on a cat.
Pasir Puteh district police chief Supt Saari Yaacob said police received a report following the spread of a video of the act on Sunday.
“Following the report, a team of police officers and personnel conducted an investigation before detaining the man to assist further investigations.
“We take this incident seriously and stress that the investigation is being carried out thoroughly to establish the actual facts and complete the probe in accordance with the provisions of the law in force,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Earlier, a 55-second video went viral on the social media platform Threads, showing the alleged vile act by a man on a cat at his home.
According to Saari, the case is being investigated under Section 377 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
He also advised the public not to speculate, spread accusations or share unverified information that could affect the investigation.
“The public is also urged not to share the video again out of respect for public sensitivities and to avoid the spread of inappropriate content,” he said.
Previously, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia urged the authorities to investigate the alleged sexual abuse of the cat.
They called on them to identify the individual involved, verify the footage and gather all digital evidence. The group said the immediate priority should be to find the cat and ensure its safety.
