CVLB, PWD to improve Pink Bus facilities

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and the Sabah Public Works Department (PWD) will work together to identify suitable locations for additional bus stops and designated stopping areas as part of efforts to improve the eight-route Pink Bus network.

Sabah CVLB Chairman Phoong Jin Zhe said the matter was discussed during a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister and Works and Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam at the PWD headquarters, with attention given to bus stop infrastructure, signage, pick-up and drop-off points and other requirements for the network’s full implementation.

Phoong said many locations along the routes still lacked proper bus stops or designated yellow bus bays, adding that even well-planned routes would not fully benefit passengers without safe and legally recognised places for buses to stop, while the CVLB is also reviewing possible additional stops including Luyang Clinic, the Likas Women and Children’s Hospital and Tanjung Aru Beach.

Joachim said road safety and traffic planning must remain key considerations when introducing new stops and instructed Sabah PWD to maintain close coordination with the CVLB, while reaffirming the State Government’s support for the Federal Government’s Pink Bus initiative.

Phoong, who also proposed reviving a cross-agency City public transport coordination committee, said cumulative ridership had surpassed 240,000 passenger trips and the CVLB would continue studying improvements and possible expansion to high-demand areas such as Penampang and Putatan, subject to passenger demand, road conditions, fleet deployment, journey times and suitable stopping facilities.
