Toh Puan Nai’mah Abdul Khalid, the wife of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, asserted today that her husband is ready to confront any charges, even from his hospital bed. She criticized Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki for insinuating that Daim was exploiting his hospitalization to delay prosecution. Nai’mah, expressing her displeasure, highlighted that neither her family nor their legal representatives had been informed about pending charges against Daim.
"We were only told that a statement was to be recorded from him. Only today, reading the news reports, have I discovered that Daim is to be charged. Hence, the insinuations made by Azam Baki that Daim is somehow evading being charged by getting hospitalized are false and mischievous," she stated firmly.
Nai’mah emphasized Daim's readiness to face any charges, asserting that he is willing to defend himself vigorously in compliance with the law. Despite being hospitalized, she indicated that, subject to hospital permission, Daim is prepared to face any political charges within the hospital premises.
Earlier, Azam Baki had stated that Daim would have been charged last week if he had not been hospitalized. He mentioned that the Attorney General’s Chambers had approved charges against Daim under the MACC Act over a week ago. Azam expressed confusion about Daim's hospitalization, stating that the reason was not disclosed by the treating doctor.
Azam specified that Daim is expected to face at least one charge related to failing to declare several properties owned by him and his wife. He mentioned the possibility of requesting a judge to attend the hospital for charging, but he considered it a last resort or a measure to be taken if circumstances necessitated. The ongoing tension between Daim's family and the MACC chief raises questions about the handling of the case and the transparency of information dissemination.
