Dana White’s close relationship with Donald Trump is at the heart of the UFC’s most unusual event yet: Freedom 250 at the White House.

Scheduled for June 14 on the South Lawn, White insists the event is about patriotism, not politics, even as Trump’s involvement draws plenty of attention.

Against that backdrop, one story involving Joe Biden’s granddaughter stands out. According to White, his plans to meet her fell through once she learned the current president would be there.

White told TIME that Biden’s granddaughter was at a UFC event at Madison Square Garden when Secret Service details crossed paths inside the venue.

After finding out she was there, the 56-year-old businessman asked staff to bring her over so he could greet her properly.

“At Madison Square Garden, Secret Service had crossed paths, and apparently Biden’s granddaughter was at the event,” he began by saying.

“And when I found that out, I said, ‘Bring her to me.’ I’d love to meet her and to treat her with the respect that she deserves.”

But according to White, she had already left after hearing that his friend Trump was on his way.

“Apparently she had left when she heard that President Trump was coming. But, you know, whoever is the President of the United States, is my President. I’m an American,” he concluded.

That view is consistent with White’s previous comments. He has said before that any sitting or former president attending a UFC event should be treated with respect.
