Dancing With the Stars ended Dedication Night with a surprise twist.
After a week filled with more drama off of the ballroom floor than on it, no one was eliminated. Instead tonight’s scores will carry over to next week when two couples will be sent packing.
The twist comes after Val Chmerkovskiy’s wife, fellow pro dancer Jenna Johnson and her partner Harry Shum, Jr., performed a samba routine during last week’s Super Bowl-themed night that included a lift called into question by judge Carrie Ann Inaba.
After Inaba’s critique, Chmerkovskiy posted a TikTok saying viewers “almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom,” a statement many took as a reference to Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap. Chmerkovskiy was then served with a one-week suspension by BBC Studios, the production company behind DWTS, becoming the first pro dancer to be suspended in the show’s history. He later apologized to Inaba both publicly and privately.
Chmerkovskiy’s partner Jenna Dewan danced with Alan Bersten instead. The couple received a 37 out of 40 from the judges, just one point ahead of Harry and Jenna. Atop the leaderboard were Amber and Pasha with a 38.
Ten couples remain in the hunt for the coveted Mirrorball Trophy. They’ll try to impress judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough, and Bruno Tonioli when the competition resumes Tuesday night at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+, with streaming available the next day on Hulu.

What did Val say about judge Carrie Ann Inaba's critiques?
Tuesday 20 October 2026 20:36 , Caitlin HornikAfter Carrie Ann Inaba referenced the rulebook about a lift performed during Jenna Johnson and Harry Shum, Jr.’s samba, Val Chmerkovskiy posted a TikTok, saying viewers “almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom,” a statement many took as a reference to Will Smith's infamous Oscars slap.
Val publicly apologized to Carrie Ann
Tuesday 20 October 2026 20:52 , Caitlin HornikIn an October 17 Instagram Story, Val wrote that he “made a poor decision to reference a meme to ‘keep my wife's name’ out of the conversation, without stopping to think through what else that reference could imply, which was genuinely never my intention.”
“Carrie Ann certainly didn't deserve to get caught in the middle of my bad judgment, and I hate that she was. The last thing I want is to become a distraction from an important week or from the incredible work my dance partner Jenna Dewan is putting in.”
Who is Val's replacement this week?
Tuesday 20 October 2026 21:06 , Caitlin HornikWith Val forced to sit out of dedication night, Alan Bersten has stepped in to ensure Jenna Dewan can compete.
Bersten was partnered this season with Giada De Laurentiis. The two were eliminated during week two of the competition.
What did BBC Studios say about Val's suspension?
Tuesday 20 October 2026 21:15 , Caitlin HornikIn a statement issued October 17, BBC Studios — the production company behind DWTS — said:
“The well-being of everyone who works on Dancing with the Stars is non-negotiable. Val’s social media post was inappropriate and does not reflect the values or standards expected of anyone connected with the show. As a result, he will not participate in next week’s show.”
Val's suspension was not the result of an HR complaint by Carrie Ann
Tuesday 20 October 2026 21:26 , Caitlin HornikIn a Tuesday report, People confirmed that Val’s suspension was not the result of an HR complaint filed by Inaba, as had been previously reported.
The suspension is the result of Val’s social media apology post, which triggered an investigation by BBC Studios, the production company behind DWTS, according to the outlet.

Harry and Jenna's Samba last week sparked Val's suspension
Tuesday 20 October 2026 22:46 , Caitlin HornikAfter Harry and Jenna performed their Samba to “Yeah!” by Usher, judge Carrie Ann Inaba commented that she “loved every minute” of the performance, but added that Harry needs to “put more content in [his] dances.”
“And there was a lift,” Carrie Ann added to Jenna.
When Jenna questioned the lift, Carrie Ann read off of a piece of paper stating that “a lift is any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of their partner.”
Carrie Ann’s critiques of Val’s wife Jenna’s choreography sparked his comment that viewers “almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom,” and ultimately led to his suspension for Dedication Night.

Val's absence addressed

Welcome to guest judge Kym Johnson!
01:05 , Caitlin Hornik“I hope you all remember to embrace the moment,” guest judge Kym Johnson said to the couples during introductions.
Ezra and Daniella are up first!

Ezra said of his mom during the pre-performance package: “She worked so hard to get me to feel confident in myself.”
Bahar said: “Everything you see on this show is genuine.”
The opening moments of this routine are stunning. Daniella climbing gently on Ezra’s leg! Gorgeous. She is truly one of the best choreographers ever.
You can feel the pure heart in this dance. Let’s hope the judges do too.
Ezra and Daniella's feedback and scores
01:12 , Caitlin Hornik“You must be so proud,” Kym said to Ezra’s mom.

A teary Carrie Ann applauded “the momentum” and “physicality.”

... And now I’m crying!

“He was very much a father figure for all of us,” Tatyana said of her on-screen father. “I miss him.”
Tatyana recorded the song that she and Jan (and Alfonso!) are dancing to.
It’s a very elegant start. It’s easy to see her growth from week 1, which is exciting!
Their actual waltzing feels a little choppy, but it’s not bad.
Alfonso stepping in for Jan to finish the routine in a nod to Avery was beautiful.
Tatyana and Jan get feedback and scores
01:23 , Caitlin Hornik“My darling, you were glowing tonight,” Bruno said. “You were guided by an inner light and it showed.”
“It was like watching an old Hollywood film come to life,” Carrie Ann said.

“I can’t let Ireland down, that’s for sure,” Maura said in the pre-performance package.
Joining them for the dedication performance is a six-time Irish dance world champion! How fun!
A routine with a shirtless Mark! How lucky are we!!!
This is fun, and obviously a great song, but I feel like Maura is getting lost in the shuffle. Felt like she stumbled a bit too when the Irish dancer joined in.
And the judges say ...
01:33 , Caitlin HornikCarrie Ann said, “That was the very first Irish Paso Doble we’ve ever had and it was amazing! I love the attack and that was the note from last week so bravo.”
“That was fantastic, I loved every minute of it,” Derek said.
“It was passion, it was power, it was pride,” Kym said. “It was so good.”
“The pride of Ireland!” Bruno said. “Careful with your shoulder lines.”

“She is the strongest, most patient person I know,” Jackson said of his mom in the pre-performance video. “I want to be able to empower her to have the time of her life on the dance floor.”
Great song choice - love the bounce, perfect for the Quickstep! They are bringing so much joy to the ballroom floor! Is it perfect? No. But it’s fun, it’s definitely a Quickstep, and again, there’s so much improvement.
Jackson and Emma get feedback and scores
01:47 , Caitlin Hornik“What a great Quickstep in the right direction,” Derek said. “The frame, even though you’re moving around, you have to maintain.”
“You are the ultimate showman,” Kym said. “When you get back into frame, lock it in.”
“You were twinkling with pleasure tonight,” Bruno said. “You were expressing yourself better than ever tonight.”

Gorgeous start. The technique and lifts! Stunning! The storytelling is excellent.
So emotional. So beautiful. Wow.
Amber and Pasha get critiques and scores
01:54 , Caitlin Hornik“The raw emotion in that ... sometimes in life you just need someone to lift you up. What a beautiful way to say thank you to your sister,” Kym said.
“Absolutely brilliant,” Bruno said. “The structure and dramatic tension were incredible.”
“Precision and passion and raw, raw powerful vulnerability,” Carrie Ann said.
Derek added: “You didn’t just show us the steps. You made us feel something. Incredible dance.”
Amber and Pasha received a 38 out of 40 from the judges, including two 10s!

Alan has stepped in to replace the suspended Val Chmerkovskiy for this week.
“I feel so honored to be able to step in and help you this week,” Alan said in the pre-performance package of the “unusual” situation.
“It’s such an honor that she would want to do this for me,” Jenna’s mom Nancy said of the dedication.
“It means so much to my heart, to my soul to give her this,” Jenna said.
Jenna is such a good dancer - it’s undeniable. She just understands the movements so well. And she looks beautiful doing it! I like her and Alan paired together so much!
This waltz is elegant and lovely.
Jenna and Alan get feedback and scores
02:05 , Caitlin Hornik“I love it when you get lyrical,” Bruno said. “That was fantastic. That quality you should retain because you’re exquisite when you’re lyrical.”
“I know this journey has been a lot,” Carrie Ann said. “That dance, to me, was the ultimate breakthrough.” She also quietly said “Alan, good job.”
“Jenna, you’re just a class act. Your joy and love of dance radiates from you. Beautiful job,” Derek said.
“You have had the biggest expectation on you coming into this” Kym said, adding that Jenna has “exceeded” them.
Jenna and Alan received a 37 out of 40, including a 10 from Carrie Ann.
The internet reacts to Carrie Ann's scoring of Jenna and Alan ...
02:10 , Caitlin HornikAfter Val’s suspension following Carrie Ann’s critiquing of his wife Jenna Johnson’s choreography, Val’s partner Jenna Dewan received a 10 from the judge while dancing with substitute Alan Bersten.
The internet took note.
“I’m actually surprised CAI gave Dewan a ten #DWTS,” one person wrote on X.
“carrie ann really said “here’s a 10 you don’t need val’s bum ass back” queen s***,” another said.
“jenna having a breakthrough with alan iktr #dwts,” someone else said.
Others said Jenna looked “more comfortable” dancing with Alan.
“Alan lowkey ate Val up with that #dwts,” another chimed in.
Someone else wrote: “carrie ann inaba messy boots” with several laughing emojis.
Harry and Jenna are up!
02:13 , Caitlin HornikHarry Shum Jr. and partner Jenna Johnson will perform a Foxtrot to “Stop This Train” by John Mayer, dedicated to his wife Shelby.
“This is my thank you to her for being so amazing in my life,” Harry said of dedicating his dance to his wife.

Okay Shelby can dance! She looks fantastic with Harry and Jenna up there!
Their daughter joining them at the end?! And his parents? Oh I’m crying again ...
Harry and Jenna's feedback and scores revealed
02:16 , Caitlin Hornik“What a beautiful way to tell your story to the world,” Carrie Ann said. “Jenna, great choreography. Way to integrate the qualities of the Foxtrot.”
“This is what Dancing With the Stars is all about,” Derek said. “Your control, you were skating across that floor like glass. Gorgeous.”
“I saw a ballroom dancer doing a beautiful Foxtrot,” Kym said. “You were leading Shelby beautifully.”
Bruno added: “Smooth, fluid, light as a caress.”
Harry and Jenna received a 36 out of 40 from the judges! Their greatest score of the season!
... and now the internet is weighing in on Carrie Ann's feedback for Jenna Johnson after last week
02:21 , Caitlin HornikCarrie Ann’s comment to Jenna Johnson about the inclusion of a lift in her choreography with Harry Shum Jr. set off the Val Chmerkovskiy firestorm.
After awarding at least one 10 during Dedication Night, Carrie Ann gave Harry and Jenna a 9.
“And no ten for Jenna J #dwts,” one fan wrote on X.
“no 10 for Harry??…oh #dwts,” someone else wrote.
“i feel like they deserved one ten thoooo #dwts,” another chimed in.
“Carrie Ann is over here throwing out 10's all night and then PRAISES Jenna & Harry,” another wrote, adding that she only “gave them a 9” with an angry face emoji.
Connor and Rylee dance next
02:24 , Caitlin HornikConnor Wood and partner Rylee Arnold will perform a Viennese Waltz to “Piano Man” by Billy Joel, dedicated to his dad Pete.
“He is my best friend,” Connor said in the pre-performance package.
“It means a ton,” Connor’s dad Pete said.
Connor has zero facial expression, poor guy is still thinking so hard. But the dancing has certainly improved. And he’s even smiling a bit!
Rylee is definitely still doing most of the leading.
That was sweet - but flat.
Dolly Parton tribute dance ...
02:32 , Caitlin Hornik... is beautiful, but awkwardly placed in the broadcast? We’re waiting for Connor and Rylee’s scores but there’s a Dolly interlude?
Tyler and Sharna dance next
02:37 , Caitlin HornikTyler Cameron and partner Sharna Burgess will perform a Contemporary routine to “Supermarket Flowers” by Ed Sheeran, dedicated to mothers.
Tyler was very emotional in the pre-performance package, talking about the sudden death of his mom.
“This is a chance to tell my mom I love her one more time,” he said.
This is beautiful - there’s no two ways about it. Tyler is not the strongest dancer, but the spirit of the dance is forgiving.
Did he just announce that they’re having a baby?! Oh my heart.
Tyler and his fiancee are doing a gender reveal on live TV!
02:38 , Caitlin HornikIt’s a girl!!!
WOW. What a live TV moment!
Tyler and Sharna get feedback and scores
02:41 , Caitlin Hornik“She would be so proud that you’re starting a family of your own,” Kym said to Tyler of his mom.
“You turned it into a celebration of a new life,” Bruno said.
“You’ve shown us the moves and that inner dancer has come out, but what I’m really noticing is the way you’ve opened your expression and your heart,” Carrie Ann said.
Derek added: “I don’t know what it’s like to lose a parent, but I know what it’s like to be a girl dad. Get ready for your heart to explode wide open.”
Tyler and Sharna received a 32 out of 40 from the judges.
Has there ever been a live gender reveal on 'DWTS' before?!
02:45 , Caitlin HornikThat was such a gorgeous moment!
“the pregnancy announcement from tyler and tate?? and for him to talk so highly of his mom, his fiancee, and then to find out ON THE SHOW that they're having a girl? so sweet!! also not alfonso asking tate how she feels and she's crying into the microphone saying ‘idk’,” one person wrote on X.
“TYLER I am SOBBING Last dance for his mom? Announcing they’re pregnant? Gender reveal? Girl dad?! Sharna OUTDID herself,” another wrote.
“i’m still in tears over tyler wdym i now have to watch a cat & the hat themed dance #dwts,” another wrote of the special dance immediately following Tyler and Sharna’s scores.

Two oddly placed dances ...
02:46 , Caitlin HornikFirst the Dolly Parton dedication dance coming between Connor and Rylee’s dance and feedback and their score results, and then this Cat in the Hat-themed dance immediately following that emotional pregnancy announcement and gender reveal? Who made these decisions?!? I’d like a word ...
Julia and Ezra are up last!
02:52 , Caitlin HornikThey’re dancing a Contemporary routine to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” by Frankie Valli, dedicated to Heath Ledger.
Stiles and Ledger worked together on the hit film 10 Things I Hate About You.
“I learned a lot from Heath,” Julia said in the pre-performance package. “It was so easy with him.”
“Life is too short and we should enjoy every minute we have on this planet,” she added.
This is captivating. The blue dress is a great touch. And it feels so celebratory and not super sad! It’s really gorgeous.
Julia was joined by the film’s cast for the final moment of the dance.
Julia and Ezra get feedback and scores
02:55 , Caitlin Hornik“It was a wonderful, wonderful tribute,” Bruno said. “Well done.”

Shirley Ballas to guest judge next week!
03:00 , Caitlin HornikMark Ballas’s mother will judge her son! Fun!
And the couple sent home is ...
03:05 , Caitlin Hornik... no one. In typical DWTS fashion given the off-screen drama and an emotional Dedication Night, everyone was safe.
But tonight’s scores will carry over to next week when two couples will be sent home!
That's all for this week!
03:12 , Caitlin HornikThat was emotional. I am exhausted and drained, yet also energized by those beautiful dances. Can’t wait to see what these brilliant choreographers come up with for next week’s spooky theme - and whether Val will be back on the dance floor.
Until then!
