Medvedev is preparing for his 10th French Open appearance after promising a clay season

Daniil Medvedev is getting ready for his 10th appearance at Roland Garros.

The Russian seems to have recovered well after his surprising 6-0, 6-0 loss to Matteo Berrettini in Monte Carlo earlier in the clay season.

Since that setback, Medvedev reached the fourth round in Madrid and made it to the semi-finals in Rome, where he came close to defeating Jannik Sinner.

He took the world number one to a deciding set at the Italian Open before a rain delay disrupted his momentum. The match turned after that, with Sinner going on to win.

Medvedev’s draw at Roland Garros opens up an opportunity

Medvedev has never made it past the quarter-finals in Paris, reaching that stage back in 2021.

This year, he’s got a real chance to go deeper, starting with Adam Walton in the opening round.

His second-round opponent will be either Alexei Popyrin or Zachary Svajda, while Francisco Cerundolo is the likely matchup waiting for him in round three.

There are good players across Medvedev’s section of the draw, but right now, none appear to have what it takes to stop him.

Names like Felix Auger-Aliassime, Flavio Cobolli and Learner Tien are also part of his quarter. But Sinner looms on the other side if Medvedev reaches the semi-finals – and that’s currently about as tough an assignment as you can get.

Medvedev’s disappointing 2025 campaign at Roland Garros

Last year wasn’t a strong one for Medvedev on the ATP Tour, and his time at Roland Garros fit that pattern.

He faced Cameron Norrie in the first round, someone he had beaten in all four of their previous meetings. But Norrie jumped out to a two-set lead before Medvedev battled back to force a decider, only for the Briton to pull away late.

Norrie took a two-set lead in the match, and Medvedev fought back to force a fifth set, but the Briton ultimately came away with the victory.

It was his first-ever opening-round exit at a major tournament and ended up being one of three he’d have that year.
