"DAP’S EXCUSES CANNOT HIDE ITS OWN DEFEATS"

LOKMAN ADAM

There is something almost comical about the latest attempt to turn Negeri Sembilan’s political turbulence into a convenient victory narrative for DAP. According to this script, the crisis is supposedly a blessing in disguise for DAP, while UMNO-PAS is allegedly paying the price. That is not analysis. That is political spin dressed up as strategy.

Let us be blunt. DAP does not get to rewrite the political scoreboard simply because the actual results are uncomfortable. When voters reject your narrative, you cannot manufacture a new storyline and declare yourself the winner. Defeat does not become victory because your friendly commentators repeat the same talking points loudly enough.

The real question is why DAP-aligned voices are suddenly so invested in portraying UMNO-PAS as politically doomed. The answer is obvious. The prospect of Malay political cooperation remains a serious electoral calculation, and that is precisely why every disagreement, controversy and political tremor involving UMNO or PAS is being amplified as though it signals the collapse of the entire Malay political equation.

But here is the inconvenient truth: political alliances are not judged by newspaper headlines. They are judged by whether they can survive pressure, negotiate differences and continue delivering political alternatives. UMNO and PAS do not need DAP-aligned commentators to certify their political future. The voters will do that at the ballot box.

As for the royal issue, responsible political debate requires facts, constitutional understanding and restraint. Reducing a complex constitutional and political matter into a simplistic slogan about an “UMNO-PAS government dethroning a ruler” is precisely the kind of sensational framing that inflames rather than informs. Serious national issues deserve better than political clickbait.

And perhaps DAP should look closer to home before celebrating somebody else’s difficulties. The political narrative conveniently sweeping around Negeri Sembilan seems designed to distract from setbacks elsewhere. Johor was not imaginary. Sabah was not imaginary. Electoral disappointment cannot simply be blamed on UMNO, PAS, royal controversies or bad optics.

Three setbacks do not disappear because somebody discovers a convenient scapegoat. If anything, the desperation to explain them away reveals how uncomfortable the results have become. Politics is brutally simple: voters make choices, parties win or lose, and excuses do not change the ballot box.

UMNO-PAS supporters should therefore refuse to be dragged into every manufactured panic. Political storms come and go. What matters is whether Malay political forces can maintain discipline, engage the rakyat and build a credible alternative based on stability, competence and national interest. That work does not stop because DAP-aligned voices declare an obituary.

So let them celebrate prematurely. Let them manufacture headlines and proclaim that Malay unity has collapsed. UMNO and PAS have their differences, but political differences are not political death. The real test is the next election, and when that day comes, it will be the rakyat not DAP’s political cheerleaders who decide who still has momentum.
