SKUDAI assemblyman Marina Ibrahim has rejected claims she is defecting or has been “bought over”, saying her decisions are guided by close consultations and a focus on delivering results rather than political confrontation.
In a Facebook post, she defended her measured approach, citing Sun Tzu’s Art of War and arguing that the best outcomes are achieved without conflict.
Marina said politics should be judged by how effectively problems are solved for constituents, not by the number of disputes waged.
“Helping the people cannot wait for election season,” she said, describing her style as “strategic diplomacy”, not weakness.
She added that she supports government initiatives that benefit her constituency while offering constructive criticism where needed, stressing that public welfare — not political point-scoring — remains her priority.
The statement comes amid controversy over a purported May 30 letter in which she allegedly declined an offer to contest the Tiram seat, along with a possible appointment to chair a government-linked company if she lost.
According to reports, Marina said she had shared “the letter” in a Johor DAP WhatsApp group, but did not confirm if it was the same document circulating online.
The issue escalated after Johor DAP chairman Teo Nie Ching revealed discussions about repositioning Marina to another seat as part of the party’s election strategy. Teo also said she had proposed a role in a statutory body to assure Marina of the party’s support.
The disclosure has triggered debate over whether such appointments should be part of candidate negotiations, further fuelling speculation following Marina’s surprise decision to retire from politics and not defend her Skudai seat. – June 1, 2026
