Yesterday, a significant incident unfolded at the Bidor Immigration Detention Depot as 131 illegal immigrants managed to escape from the men's block. Among the escapees, 115 were identified as ethnic Rohingya, while the remaining 16 were Myanmar nationals, as reported by Supt Mohd Naim Asnawi, the Tapah district police chief.
The unfolding events began when a concerned citizen contacted the police, notifying them that all detainees had successfully fled from the Bidor Immigration Detention Depot. Tragically, one individual suspected of being an escaped detainee was involved in a fatal road accident and perished at the scene on KM335 of the North-South Expressway.
In response to this security breach, law enforcement authorities have initiated a comprehensive search operation to locate the escaped detainees. The investigation is actively ongoing, with the collaborative efforts of officers and members from the 3rd Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) in Bidor, along with support from Bukit Aman and the state Criminal Investigation Departments.
Supt Mohd Naim Asnawi specified that the case is being examined under Section 147 of the Penal Code and Section 223/224 of the Penal Code. Intensive efforts are being undertaken to locate and apprehend the escaped detainees, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any relevant information. Individuals possessing information related to the incident can contact the Tapah IPD operations room at 05-401 5222.
This escape raises concerns about the security measures in place at immigration detention facilities, highlighting the need for a thorough review of protocols and procedures. As authorities intensify their efforts to track down the escaped individuals, questions linger about how such a large-scale escape could occur and what steps will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The community remains vigilant as the investigation unfolds and awaits updates from law enforcement regarding the progress and findings related to this daring escape.
