- Ugandan footballer David Owori, captain of Premier League side SC Villa and a national team player, has died after being fatally assaulted by a street gang in a suspected robbery on Monday evening near his home in Makindye, Kampala.
- Assailants reportedly threw paving stones at Owori as he resisted the robbery, stealing his belongings and leaving him unconscious before he later died from his injuries at a nearby clinic.
- Tributes have poured in from the football community, including SC Villa and the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa), who praised Owori as an “inspiration leader and role model”.
- SC Villa and Fufa have called for urgent justice, with public anger mounting over the high level of violent crime in Kampala, following a similar fatal attack on rugby player Sydney Gongodyo weeks prior.
- Uganda's Parliament held a minute's silence in Owori's honour and called for an investigation, with police detectives currently working to identify the perpetrators of the crime.
