Days after former Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh questioned the appointment of Kewal Singh Dhillon as BJP Punjab chief, his wife and Congress MP-turned-BJP leader Preneet Kaur on Wednesday vowed total support to the new state president.
A large flex sheet displayed on the stage at a function prominently featured Captain Amarinder’s photograph alongside BJP national secretary Tarun Chugh and former MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, signalling the importance the party continues to give to the veteran leader despite recent differences.
Speaking at the function where Dhillon was scheduled to take over as BJP chief, Preneet Kaur emphasised the need for unity ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
“The high command has shown trust in you. We all have gathered here to welcome and support you,” Kaur said, addressing Dhillon directly.
“Before him, all those who have supported the party, we thank them. We all should be united and work together to win the 2027 Assembly elections.”
Kaur, who joined the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, particularly highlighted that Dhillon, having been appointed by the party’s high command, would receive her complete backing.
Captain Amarinder had earlier expressed doubts about Dhillon’s potential success as the party’s state president. While acknowledging that Dhillon was once close to him, the veteran leader stated that he had not met him for several years. He also denied media reports suggesting that he had recommended Dhillon’s name for the post.
