Kota Kinabalu: City Hall (DBKK) has won the Government Category (Green Initiative Award) at the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards (MLAA) 2026 for its Kota Kinabalu Urban Garden Project, becoming the only local authority in Sabah to receive the national recognition.
Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said the award reflected DBKK's continued commitment to expanding community participation through smart community initiatives and the development of urban gardens.
He said the achievement demonstrated that a community-centred approach to environmental sustainability could deliver meaningful impact and gain national recognition, while strengthening public awareness and participation in urban development.
Dr Sabin announced the achievement when officiating the launch of Landscape Day and Kota Kinabalu Heritage Trail 2026, adding that the initiatives had produced encouraging results.
The MLAA is the highest recognition platform for Malaysia's landscape architecture profession and is organised by the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (Ilam), with this year's event attracting more than 700 industry players from Malaysia and abroad and over 120 entries across 20 award categories.
