Death toll from Luis, Maymay, monsoon rises to 26 — NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll from the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis and Maymay and the southwest monsoon has risen to 26, while more than 5.1 million people have been affected nationwide, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Tuesday.

In its 6 a.m. situation report, the NDRRMC said 17 people were injured and one person remains missing.

Benguet recorded the highest number of fatalities with 15, including 10 in Baguio City, two in La Trinidad and three in Atok, all due to landslides.

Other fatalities were reported in La Union, Rizal, Batangas, Quezon, Negros Occidental and the National Capital Region (NCR).

The NDRRMC said the weather disturbances affected 1,468,226 families or 5,146,748 persons in Ilocos Region (Region I), Cagayan Valley (Region II), Central Luzon (Region III), Bicol Region (Region V), Western Visayas (Region VI), Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX), Calabarzon, the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), NCR and Mimaropa.

A total of 313 evacuation centers remain operational, sheltering 6,338 families or 21,591 persons.

The NDRRMC also reported damage to 1,989 houses, including 1,786 partially damaged and 203 totally destroyed.

Infrastructure damage was estimated at P3.11 billion, while agricultural losses reached P1.42 billion.

The government has so far provided P760.11 million worth of assistance to affected communities.

The NDRRMC said one person remained missing in Batangas City.
