Death toll from rains climbs to 27

THE death toll from storms Maymay, Luis and the southwest monsoon or habagat has reached 27, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Monday.

At a press briefing, PNP spokesman Col. Allen Rae Co said that one of the fatalities was a police personnel.

Co reported that two persons were missing and 18 injured as of Monday morning.

He said that police units will continue to assist in disaster response and maintain peace and order in areas affected by heavy rains.

Co said 166 PNP personnel were deployed specifically for relief operations, while over 10,000 are on standby for deployment.

The PNP report differs from the number of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), which listed only 23 fatalities.

The OCD said over five million people have been affected by the weather disturbance in all regions in Luzon, including Metro Manila.

A total of 24,893 people or 7,182 families were staying in 523 evacuation centers.

The PNP had explained that its death toll is based on data from the ground, while the OCD’s count goes through confirmation and validation.
