The Delhi Government has approved the renaming of several Metro stations, public institutions and landmarks in the Capital.
The decisions were approved during a meeting of the State Names Authority (SNA) chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at the Delhi Secretariat.
Under the changes, Rohini West Metro station will be renamed “Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital Metro station”, while Rohini East Metro station will be renamed simply as “Rohini Metro station” to improve commuter convenience and strengthen the area’s identity, officials said.
The government also approved the naming of the under-construction sports complex at Begampur in Rohini, Sector 33, as “Atal Khel Parisar”. A statue of Vajpayee will also be installed at the complex.
Addressing the meeting, Gupta said the decisions reflected Delhi’s cultural identity, social consciousness and national heritage. She said the government not only aimed to develop the Capital but also to preserve and strengthen its historical and cultural legacy.
“Honouring personalities who have made significant contributions to society and public life is among the government’s priorities, and such decisions help strengthen collective public memory,” the Chief Minister said.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Delhi Chief Secretary, Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Director of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
The authority also approved renaming the under-construction hospital at Jwalapuri as “Baba Ramdevji Maharaj Hospital”.
In another decision, Dwarka Metro station will now be renamed “Dwarka-Kakrola Metro station” to better reflect the local geographical identity of the area. It further approved renaming Britannia Chowk in Shakurpur as “Ashwini Chopra (Minna) Chowk”.
Speaking on the renaming of Rohini West Metro station, Gupta said Ambedkar’s contribution to India’s constitutional and social history remained unparalleled and that institutions named after him promote the values of equality, justice and social empowerment.
Referring to Vajpayee, the Chief Minister said the former Prime Minister had given new direction to development, democratic values and national unity, and naming the sports complex after him would inspire the younger generation.
