Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday flagged off a special rescue and rehabilitation campaign for homeless, sick and destitute people across the capital, launching ambulances and rescue vans under a joint initiative of the Delhi Government, Apna Ghar Ashram and Seva Bharti.
The five-day campaign, scheduled from May 11 to 15, will cover all 13 districts of Delhi and aims to rescue vulnerable individuals living on the streets and shift them to shelter homes for treatment, care and rehabilitation.
Speaking at the launch event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the ambulances and vans dispatched from Apna Ghar Ashram would help identify and rescue homeless and critically ill people from across the city.
“Homeless and sick people in the city will be rescued and brought to the ashram, where they will be treated and cared for,” she said.
The initiative was formally announced by Delhi Social Welfare Minister Ravinder Indraj Singh during a press conference at Apna Ghar Ashram in Pooth Khurd, on Sunday.
The minister said 19 vehicles would be deployed during the campaign and assistance was expected to reach more than 300 people. He added that rescued individuals would be provided medical treatment, shelter and rehabilitation support at Apna Ghar Ashrams.
Calling the campaign a humanitarian effort, Ravinder Indraj Singh said a “One Window System” had been established to coordinate rescue operations and welfare services through the Department of Social Welfare.
“Service to humanity is the greatest religion. Serving neglected and destitute individuals is equivalent to serving God,” he said.
