Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma on Saturday said the Delhi Government was taking all necessary measures to maintain water supply across the national capital despite a sharp decline in the Yamuna’s water level at the Wazirabad Barrage during the peak summer season.
The minister said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a detailed review meeting via video conferencing to assess the prevailing water situation in Delhi. Senior officials from the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and other concerned departments reviewed raw water availability, production levels at water treatment plants and ongoing efforts to ensure uninterrupted supply.
According to the minister, Delhi requires approximately 1,250 million gallons per day (MGD) of water during the summer months. However, the water level at the Wazirabad Barrage has dropped significantly from its normal pond level of 674.5 ft to nearly 668 ft, leading to a shortage of raw water and affecting production by nearly 80-100 MGD. He attributed the situation to a prolonged dry spell in the upper reaches of the Yamuna, which has reduced inflows into the river. To tackle the shortage, the Jal Board has diverted additional raw water from the Carrier Line Canal through the Twin Mains system to the Wazirabad intake. Emergency pumping arrangements have been made in the dry riverbed.
