Delhi woke to another unusually warm morning on Monday even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert forecasting thunderstorms and rainfall later in the day and on Tuesday, signalling yet another abrupt turn in the capital’s weather pattern.
The national capital and adjoining NCR regions have witnessed sudden fluctuations over recent days, with warmer nights followed by forecasts of rain and gusty conditions.
According to IMD data, Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 27.1 degrees Celsius on Monday morning, 1.7 degrees above normal for this time of year.
The rise in nighttime temperatures was not limited to central Delhi. Lodhi Road and Ayanagar also recorded warmer-than-usual conditions, with minimum temperatures settling at 26.4 degrees Celsius at both stations.
In contrast, Palam and Ridge stations recorded slightly cooler conditions compared to the seasonal average. Palam reported a minimum of 25.2 degrees Celsius, while Ridge recorded 24.7 degrees Celsius, both marginally below normal.
The IMD’s yellow alert has now drawn attention to the possibility of thunderstorms and rainfall through Monday and Tuesday. The forecast comes as residents across Delhi-NCR continue to experience unpredictable weather swings, with sunny, humid conditions often giving way to sudden cloud cover and strong winds.
The changing weather has also disrupted daily routines, with residents stepping out into warm and uncomfortable mornings only to brace for possible rain and thunderstorms later in the day.
While no severe warning has been issued, the yellow alert indicates that residents should remain cautious, particularly during evening hours when thunderstorm and rainfall activity is expected to intensify.
