A demolition drive was launched in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh on Sunday to remove encroachments along a road, an official said.
The operation, being taken against around 150 structures as part of a road-widening project, began around 4 am with heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel, turning the entire area into a high-security zone, police said.
Senior officers, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Assistant Commissioner of Police, were present at the site to oversee security and maintain law and order during the exercise, the officer said.
Meanwhile, in an appeal, senior police officers said Northwest district police appeals to all residents of the Shalimar Bagh area to maintain peace, harmony and law and order.
“In view of the Supreme Court’s order and the prevailing situation, an extensive flag march has been conducted in the area to ensure peace, security and communal harmony. Citizens are requested not to pay attention to any provocative speeches, rumours, misleading messages or unverified information being circulated through social media or any other medium," a post of the Senior Police officer read on X.
Urging everyone to cooperate with the police and administration, the officer said, “Let us all work together to strengthen peace, unity and communal harmony."
