Michael Valgren powered to victory on stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia after launching an attack just over a kilometre from the finish in Andalo.
The EF Education-EasyPost rider completed Wednesday’s hilly 202km stage from Cassano d’Adda in four hours, 41 minutes and 33 seconds, finishing ahead of Andreas Leknessund and Damiano Caruso.
Valgren, 34, had worked alongside Movistar’s Einer Rubio from 20 kilometres remaining before making his decisive move on the final climb to the line.
The triumph was a first WorldTour stage victory for the Dane, who suffered a career-threatening injury at the Route d’Occitanie in 2022.
Valgren’s compatriot Jonas Vingegaard, who claimed his fourth stage win of this year’s race on Tuesday, comfortably retained the overall lead.
