Oral health is often treated as a low priority in the Philippines. Dental concerns are frequently ignored until they develop into more serious problems that affect daily life, according to dental professionals.
Dentist Camille Ampong, founder of Ampong Dental, said oral care is commonly overlooked despite its impact on overall well-being.
Ampong, whose clinic has worked with public figures including Mimiyuuuh, KaladKaren, Benedict Cua, and Joy Barcoma, to name a few, encouraged Filipinos to place greater emphasis on dental health in 2026.
In an interview, Ampong said good oral hygiene starts at home and goes beyond routine dental visits.
“Oral health is more than just going to the dentist. Many times, regular brushing for at least two minutes, flossing and tongue cleaning are neglected,” she said.
“Many also put off regular checkups or neglect to wear retainers after braces. Ignoring these small steps can lead to gum disease and tooth loss.”
She added that dental care should be treated as part of overall wellness.
Being familiar with common dental issues can help people avoid discomfort, costly procedures and long-term health complications, she noted.
As part of her advocacy for oral health awareness, Ampong shared basic reminders for maintaining dental hygiene, including limiting sugary snacks and beverages, especially between meals.
“Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste,” she said. “When brushing is not an option, rinse your mouth with water after ingesting sweet food items, and have your teeth checked every six months.”
Ampong also pointed to teeth staining and discoloration as common concerns among Filipinos, often influenced by local cuisine and lifestyle habits.
“Regular usage of coffee, tea, soy sauce, shrimp paste and tobacco products can cause teeth to darken over time, reducing confidence and social engagement,” she said.
She added that persistent bad breath should not be ignored. “Bad breath can be particularly distressing. Beyond the social impact, it may indicate underlying dental problems or systemic health issues.”
Asked about her motivation as a practitioner, Ampong said addressing these often-overlooked dental concerns has reinforced the purpose of her work, particularly when it helps patients regain confidence through proper care.
“Being a dentist for so many years has been a life-changing experience for me, and I continue to find it rewarding,” she said. “When people come to see me, I always advise them to relax and not feel embarrassed about sharing their dental concerns.”
She said her goal is to help patients address insecurities related to their smiles by guiding them through proper treatment and professional care.
Ampong Dental provides preventive care, restorative and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, and advanced services such as TMJ therapy, bite rehabilitation and implants. Ampong said her practice focuses on functional dental solutions that support long-term oral health, alongside aesthetic considerations.
