Housing in Malaysia can be quite expensive, with costs varying widely based on location and property type. For young workers, owning a home can be challenging, especially given their monthly salaries.
According to a recent update shared by @NewsBFM, Deputy MITI Minister Liew Chin Tong is pushing for more affordable inner-city housing for young workers in Malaysia.

Liew proposes that PNB and Sime Darby offer housing within walking distance for the 15,000 workers at Merdeka 118, especially focusing on those with monthly incomes below RM5,000.
He also pointed out that even though the inner city heritage buildings are falling apart, many Malaysians have to travel long distances from the suburbs to the cities for work every day.
Impacts on the environment
Liew also expresses his disapproval of adopting the American lifestyle with its spread-out suburbs and heavy use of private cars, pointing out the environmental damage they cause.
“Insufficient public transport connections in towns and cities may worsen the social isolation of the elderly population, potentially complicating the delivery of care services,” he added.
For many young workers, having their own home means financial stability, independence, and a major accomplishment. There’s hope that young Malaysian workers will have the opportunity to achieve homeownership after all!
