Burger King Malaysia recently joined the Menu Rahmah initiative and is now offering burgers to the B40 community for just RM5.

Nevertheless, it's a big deal, especially because it's the first and largest fast-food chain to support the programme.

But aside from that, do you know who owns Burger King Malaysia?

In case you didn't already know, NTUC Newscape Capital Sdn Bhd owns Burger King Malaysia under Lee Thiam Wah and Chua Tia Guan, the founder and chairman of 99 Speedmart Sdn Bhd.

In addition to owning 99Speedmart and dominating the FMCG market, Lee Thiam Wah and his wife have also opened 2,000 outlets in November 2021.

The long history of Burger King in this country has seen a number of franchisees. It was finally resolved in 2011 with the help of the government-affiliated private equity fund management company Ekuiti Nasional Bhd (Ekuinas). Then, for RM74.6 million in August 2015, Ekuinas sold Newscape Capital Sdn Bhd (Newscape), a business owned by Lee, the franchisee rights to Burger King Malaysia and Singapore.

For Lee, opening his own fast food restaurant and ordering his preferred Burger King WHOPPER prepared exactly how he wants it must be a dream come true.

Since Burger King's new logo was unveiled in 2021, Lee has invested money to open new locations, remodel existing ones, and rebrand franchised restaurants to match the company's new global identity as a more contemporary and digitally friendly brand personality.

The rebranding is Burger King's first comprehensive revamp in 20 years.

Well, now you know!
