The National Registration Department (JPN) has announced a simpler way for non-Muslim couples to register their civil marriage in Malaysia, with applications now available online.

JPN Selangor confirmed that online civil marriage applications are now open to individuals aged 21 and above. To be eligible, both the applicant and their partner must meet specific criteria, including holding Malaysian citizenship.

Eligibility and requirements

Before applying, couples must ensure they meet the following conditions:

  • Residential Records: Both partners must be registered in the same district, as per the address recorded on their MyKad
  • Employment Restrictions: The applicant must not be a member of the Malaysian Armed Forces or an officer of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM)
  • Physical Submission: Any applications that do not meet the standard online requirements must still be submitted in person at a JPN office

Step-by-step guide to applying online

If you meet the eligibility criteria, follow these steps to register your marriage:

  1. Register an account at MyGovernment first before visiting the JPN portal to select the service. Log in to your account or sign up as a new user if you are using the portal for the first time
  2. Carefully read the terms and conditions. If you agree, click “Agree” to proceed
  3. Fill in the required digital forms and click “Submit”
  4. Once the application has been successfully registered, print the application slip. You must bring this slip to the JPN counter to finalise the process

The department has advised all applicants to double-check the terms and conditions, particularly regarding the correct marriage district, prior to submitting their application.
