Diogo Jota given touching World Cup tribute during Portugal national anthem

A touching tribute was paid to Diogo Jota during the Portuguese national anthem before their World Cup last-32 clash with Croatia, on the first anniversary of his tragic death.

A picture of Jota, a former Portugal international, appeared on the big screen at BMO Field in Toronto, flashing up to a cheer towards the end of Portugal’s national anthem "A Portuguesa".

Cristiano Ronaldo appeared emotional as the cameras came on to him at the end of the anthem, who played alongside Jota 32 times for his country.

Jota, 28, was killed alongside his brother Andre Silva, 25, in a car crash, with their deaths sparking an immense outpouring of grief across footballing communities.

Portugal, along with ex-club Liverpool, have kept Jota as an active member in both of their squads, with the Reds retiring his No 20 shirt while Roberto Martinez named him as an honorary player in their World Cup roster.

“Diogo’s dream is still with us and he sets the standards,” Martinez said before the Croatia outing. “He sets the light for the direction of this group.

“Every day is difficult. When we are training, there are always moments when Diogo comes back into our memory.

“I think the anniversary is just a moment that makes this game Diogo Jota’s game. Diogo will always be with us.”

Portugal carried a poignant reminder of Jota into the World Cup with each player receiving bracelet from Portugal’s Prime Minister that beared their own name alongside their late team-mate.

Liverpool have also honoured Jota on the first anniversary of his passing, installing a permanent Anfield memorial, ‘Forever 20’, to him and his brother Andre Silva on the eve of the first anniversary of their death.

“’Forever 20’ will serve as a permanent symbol of love, unity and remembrance, and a place where everyone can reflect, remember and pay their respects,” said a club statement.
