Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has urged Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties to stand firm against what he described as the opposition’s “dirty tactics” aimed at destabilizing the state government. Speaking at an event with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Hajiji called on the coalition to remain united in the face of challenges, including allegations of corruption involving several state assembly members.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the resilience of GRS over the past four years, noting that the coalition has weathered various political storms. However, he emphasized that the latest allegations of bribery represent a significant test of the coalition’s strength and determination. “The opposition is employing slander and deceit to undermine the GRS-Pakatan Plus government,” Hajiji said. “This is a fight we must carry to the end to prevent such tactics from misleading the public and eroding trust in the government and its leadership.”
Hajiji also underscored the importance of ensuring that misinformation does not sway public opinion against the current administration. He called on GRS members to work diligently to counteract the opposition's alleged unethical strategies, stating, “We must protect the people from being poisoned by lies intended to tarnish the image of the state government.”
In his speech, the Chief Minister specifically praised the role of the LDP in combating what he described as baseless accusations and manipulation. He urged the party to continue its efforts in countering the opposition's narrative and maintaining the coalition’s credibility.
The backdrop to Hajiji’s remarks includes a graft probe involving five Sabah assemblymen. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recently questioned these lawmakers in connection with videos alleging misuse of power in awarding state projects. The controversy was sparked earlier this month when news portal Malaysiakini released four videos showing an off-screen businessman negotiating project approvals with a Sabah assemblyman. These allegations have added fuel to political tensions in the state, with critics questioning the transparency of the administration.
While Hajiji did not directly address the MACC investigation in his speech, his call for unity and resilience reflects the coalition’s determination to weather the storm. “The GRS government is committed to serving the people and ensuring that governance remains transparent and accountable,” he said.
The Chief Minister's call for solidarity comes at a critical time as the coalition faces mounting pressure from both the opposition and public scrutiny. Hajiji’s appeal to GRS members highlights the need for political unity to counteract external threats while continuing to deliver on the government’s commitments to the people of Sabah.
As Sabah navigates this politically charged period, Hajiji’s leadership will be pivotal in rallying the coalition to remain focused on governance and overcoming the challenges posed by these allegations. His message of resilience and unity aims to reassure the public that the state government is prepared to address these issues transparently while protecting its mandate to govern.
