Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has called on Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties to stand firm against the opposition’s alleged "dirty tactics" after several state assemblymen faced bribery accusations.

Speaking to members of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), a GRS component, Hajiji emphasized the coalition's ability to withstand challenges over the past four years. However, he warned that the current accusations represent a significant test of its resilience.

“The Opposition is using dirty tactics to bring down the GRS-Pakatan Plus government by spreading slander and lies against the state government and party leadership,” Hajiji said in his speech. “This is the challenge we must fight until the end, as it can poison the people’s minds to hate the government and its leaders.”

Hajiji stressed the importance of maintaining public trust and urged GRS parties to actively counter misinformation. He noted that these alleged tactics are aimed at undermining the state government and destabilizing its leadership. He also highlighted the critical role of the LDP in addressing these challenges, urging the party to remain vigilant and effective in combating what he described as deceitful strategies by political opponents.

The Chief Minister’s comments come in the wake of an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), which has summoned five Sabah lawmakers for questioning. The investigation relates to videos allegedly showing discussions about abusing state resources for personal or political gain. Earlier this month, news portal Malaysiakini published four videos in which a businessman, speaking off-screen, appeared to negotiate with a Sabah assemblyman regarding support for a company’s project proposal in the state.

Hajiji reiterated that such allegations and the dissemination of related videos are part of a broader strategy to discredit the GRS-Pakatan Plus government. He described these actions as deliberate attempts to tarnish the reputation of the state administration and its leaders, urging GRS to counteract the narrative effectively.

The public must not be misled by those attempting to overthrow the state government using underhanded tactics, he said. Hajiji also reminded coalition members to remain united, emphasizing that collective strength and resilience are key to overcoming political challenges.

Hajiji’s speech comes at a time when Sabah’s political landscape remains dynamic and contentious. The allegations against state assemblymen and the subsequent MACC probe have sparked public debate, with both government and opposition parties trading accusations.

The Chief Minister’s remarks aim to rally GRS members, urging them to focus on their shared mission of serving the people of Sabah while defending the government against what he terms as unethical political strategies. Hajiji concluded his address by reaffirming his confidence in the coalition’s ability to weather the storm, urging unity and determination in the face of adversity.

With the allegations and political tensions unlikely to subside soon, GRS now faces the dual challenge of maintaining public confidence while addressing internal and external pressures.
