When a follower suggested we review halal Chinese food, we knew just the place to try—Al Amber Restaurant at Nexus Bangsar South. So we set out for lunch to explore what this unique mixed-culture restaurant had to offer.
Blending Chinese and Malay influences, Al Amber provides a cozy environment perfect for family gatherings. As we scanned the menu, one thing quickly stood out—almost everything was spicy. It seemed like Al Amber had embraced the bold flavors of Chinese cuisine with a fiery twist, promising an exciting meal ahead. So, here’s what we ordered!
We kicked things off with the roasted bun. Unfortunately, it looked as dry as it tasted. The texture was a bit underwhelming, and though the flavor was decent, there wasn’t anything special about it.
At first glance, the dish looked intimidating with its bright red chili oil, but surprisingly, it wasn’t as spicy as we thought. It was quite addictive, though, with a slight oily and salty aftertaste. The portion was generous, packed with a variety of ingredients.
Deep-Fried Chicken with Chili
We expected a dry, fiery dish similar to the classic Chinese làzǐ jī, but instead, we got Kam Heong Chicken. Maybe we ordered the wrong one? Nonetheless, the dish was flavorful, though most pieces had more bones than meat. Still, it was tasty enough to enjoy.
Lamb Dishes
We also sampled a trio of lamb dishes: Lamb Chop, Lamb Kebab, and Toothpick Lamb. All three were tender, juicy, and well-seasoned with cumin powder. The rich flavors were satisfying, but after a while, the taste became overwhelming—definitely not something to overindulge in.
Other Dishes
To balance out the meal, we ordered some lighter dishes, including Spicy and Sour Shredded Potatoes, Sautéed Tofu in Hot & Spicy Sauce, and Cabbage with Mushroom. These sides offered a nice contrast to the heavier, meat-based mains.
While the food delivered on flavor and portion size, the service was a bit slow. We waited quite a while for the dishes to arrive, but considering the large portions, the pricing felt reasonable. In fact, we even had enough leftovers to pack up and take home!
After trying everything, we rated the overall experience a 7 out of 10. The food at Al Amber was flavorful and hearty, though a few dishes were hit or miss.
