THE rehabilitation of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) has entered its Phase 2, with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) employing modern paving technology to speed up construction, improve road quality, and minimize disruptions to motorists.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon said the rehabilitation now covers the stretch from Orense Street in Makati City to Monumento in Caloocan City.
Dizon said the DPWH is using computer-guided and assisted paving machines equipped with laser technology to ensure the asphalt is laid quickly, evenly and more durably than through the traditional manual process.
“We are using technologies that will speed up the work and ensure it is done properly. The paving is computer-guided to ensure the surface is even. It uses lasers,” he told The Manila Times.
“The instruction of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is that we must fulfill our promise to finish the work faster while, at the same time, keeping disruptions to a minimum,” the DPWH chief added.
Also, he said the rehabilitation is progressing about 500 meters per day, with work being carried out simultaneously from different sections of EDSA, which used to be called Highway 54, to shorten the overall construction period.
Aside from repaving the highway, the DPWH is also removing obstructions along sidewalks and widening pedestrian walkways to improve accessibility and safety, the top DPWH official said, stressing that sidewalk improvements are a simple but effective solution that will make walking along EDSA safer and more convenient for the public.
