MANILA, Philippines — The ongoing rehabilitation of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) entered Phase 2 with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) adopting modern paving technology to speed up construction, improve road quality, and minimize disruptions to motorists.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Vince Dizon said the rehabilitation covered the stretch from Orense Street in Makati City to Monumento in Caloocan City.
Dizon said the DPWH was using computer-guided and assisted paving machines equipped with laser technology to ensure the asphalt was laid quickly, evenly, and more durably than through the traditional manual process.
"We are now using technologies that will speed up the work and ensure it is done properly. The paving is computer-guided to make sure the surface is even. It uses lasers,” he told The Manila Times.
“The instruction of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is that we must fulfill our promise to finish the work faster while, at the same time, keeping disruptions to a minimum," the DPWH chief added.
Dizon said the rehabilitation was progressing around 500 meters per day, with work being carried out simultaneously from different sections of EDSA, which used to be called "Highway 54" in the old days, to shorten the overall construction period.
Aside from repaving the highway, the DPWH is also removing obstructions along sidewalks and widening pedestrian walkways to improve accessibility and safety, the top DPWH official said.
He stressed that sidewalk improvements were a simple but effective solution that would make walking along EDSA safer and more convenient for the public.
