DMW helps families of 2 OFWs who died in SKorea fire

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) extended condolences and gave immediate assistance to the families of the two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who died in a fire in South Korea.

The fire occurred on Aug. 28, 2026, in a factory for paint ingredients and raw materials in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province.

"According to the South Chungcheong Provincial Fire Headquarters, the two OFWs were among the three who died in the incident, while another OFW sustained burns and is currently being treated in a hospital," the DMW said in Filipino and English in a statement on Wednesday.

"Through our Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Seoul, we immediately coordinated with the family of our deceased OFWs. We extend our condolences to their families, and we assure them of the assistance that they need," DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said.

The department said that through the MWO in Seoul, "the DMW immediately coordinated with the family of the deceased OFWs to extend the necessary support, including the processing of documentation and assistance in the travel of the next of kin to South Korea for the repatriation of the remains."

The department added that the MWO-Seoul provided financial assistance to five OFWs affected by the fire.

The MWO-Seoul "continues to monitor the condition of the affected OFWs to provide the necessary Aksyon Fund assistance, including financial, legal and welfare assistance," the department said.
