Christal Asong Vinsien, 28, decided to quit being a medical doctor after a year as a houseman and help young professionals and doctors to tap into their inner potential and discover how they can serve society better.
“Many of the doctors and youths struggled to find their true calling in life as a result of stress and dissatisfaction,” Dr. Asong reminisced.
Her experiences prompted her to write a book which will be published soon, sharing the five steps people can find their purpose and find their true career. These are: Self-Awareness; Self-Knowledge; Envisioning; Resilience and Commitment.
“I wrote this book from a bitter experience as a houseman when a patient nearly died while I was on call. I was alone having to care for 30 other patients in the ward when a 60-year-old man was bleeding profusely.” Then a specialist doctor came to the rescue and saved his life.
Immediately, the specialist demanded: “Write me an explanation letter on your carelessness and negligence. Then, hand it to me by today.”
“A few months prior to that incident, I had been toying with the idea of quitting my medical career. Every day, I felt like I was literally dragging my feet to work. Every task felt like a chore. It’s ironic because medicine is a study about life, but deep inside, I felt lifeless, just going through the motions, like a zombie sleepwalking through work. Medicine is also a study about humanity, but the workload, working hours and work culture is just inhumane in and of itself.”
Becoming a doctor was her childhood dream and it was not what she expected when she started working as a houseman. “After my resignation, I uploaded my journey of leaving my medical profession on Youtube and this attracted thousands of views and comments”, she said.

When she shared her frustration on Youtube, she got a lot of moral support and most of them shared about their own struggles in their career as well. “They started reaching out to me, asking for career advice and that is when I saw a demand for coaching and training in career guidance”, she added.
By providing guidance and support, Dr. Asong helped people find their purpose and achieve their full potential. Her work with young professionals and doctors is helping to inspire positive change and unlock the potential of many individuals.
Dr. Asong's workshops and training sessions has been well-received, with many people praising her for her ability to inspire and motivate them in working in careers that aligns with their values and goals.
Dr. Asong is a trailblazer in the field of career guidance in Malaysia. With her expertise in self-discovery, self-actualization, and mindfulness, she is making a significant impact in the lives of many Malaysians.
