Doraha police claim to have solved a case of blind murder of a 14-year-old specially-abled boy with the arrest of a 35-year-old man.
The accused was identified as Mani Kumar, a resident of Doraha village.
Giving details, the police said the boy, who lived with his mother in the forest area of Katana Sahib in Katana, went missing on May 6.
The boy’s disappearance was reported by the locals to the police, which registered a case under Section 103 of the BNS.
The police team followed the trail of the victim’s belongings and, with the assistance of the villagers, recovered the unclothed body of the boy in the village pond and his bloodstained clothes from near the pond. Preliminary information suggested foul play, but it was too early to conclude.
SHO Doraha Akash Dutt said the case was particularly challenging as there was no CCTV footage or digital evidence from the scene of the crime.
“The breakthrough came when we found a video clip showing a man on the phone near the area around the time of the crime. It was based on that that we zeroed in on Mani Kumar, a 35-year-old resident of Doraha village, posing to work in a factory in Bhawanigarh, Sangrur in Patiala, after committing the heinous crime,” the SHO added.
SP(D) Pawanjit Singh said it was a sensitive case involving a minor.
“Despite no digital evidence, our teams relied on extensive groundwork and intelligence to identify and arrest the accused. The murderer named Mani Kumar is a serial rapist who was in jail for the past 5 years for sexually abusing a lady and attempting to murder her. He had left home much earlier and none knew about his whereabouts. He had been released from jail last year. He is a person with distorted psychology who exhibited his abnormal behaviour on a person of any age,” the police official added.
