MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala surged to a new WTA doubles career-high at the live rankings, climbing 14 spots to No. 87.
Ranked No. 101 with a career-best No. 99 at the official rankings, Eala leaped to No.87 after she and Turkish partner Zeynep Sonmez opened their 1000 Madrid Open campaign with a win last Thursday.
Eala and Sonmez dispatched the Taiwanese-Hungarian pair of Chan Hao-ching and Fanny Stollar in the round of 32, 6-2, 6-2.
The win boosted Eala with 120 ranking points for a total of 888.
Wildcard entrants Eala and Sonmez will next face the second seed and elite Czech-American duo of Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend in the round of 16 on Saturday.
Siniakova is No. 2 and Townsend is No. 5, respectively, in the doubles rankings.
They ruled the Indian Wells and Miami Open doubles tourneys together last March.
