Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad responded today to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent comments, refuting the notion that investigating someone with a "Tun" title is more challenging than probing a prime minister. Dr. Mahathir emphasized that the prime minister holds federal government authority and declared his readiness to undergo investigation, asserting his transparency.

Disagreeing with recent reports suggesting difficulty in investigating individuals with the honorific "Tun," Dr. Mahathir addressed a press conference, stating, “I want to refer to today’s news report saying that it is not easy to investigate a Tun. I disagree. The government has the power. I don’t anymore. I am easy to investigate. It is the prime minister that’s hard to investigate.”

Responding to Anwar's call for public support in investigating individuals with the title "Tun," Dr. Mahathir highlighted the government's capabilities in accessing data and information from its archives to seek evidence. He encouraged scrutiny of his financial activities, saying, “You can check with the Inland Revenue Board, you can check with Petronas whether it is true that I made billions of Ringgit. The government can do it because they have the power. Show me the proof that I stole the Rakyat’s money.”

Dr. Mahathir accused the government of selective prosecution and cited the case of MACC’s chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki, whose share trading account was used by his brother for share transactions, a move perceived as proxy trading. Expressing concern over the investigation into his son, Dr. Mahathir questioned the fairness of the process, stating, “My son told me that he is being investigated. Everything that he has done for the past 42 years must be proven that he is not involved in corruption. If not, he will be jailed for five years. Just because he is my son. But what about Azam Baki? His brother used his account to trade shares.”

Highlighting what he perceived as a bias in the government's actions, Dr. Mahathir criticized Anwar's regime, alleging, "Those who are against the government will be investigated, those who are for, even if he has 47 charges against him, will be freed. This is Malaysia under Anwar’s regime. I was a prime minister, but these things didn't happen. Because I didn't abuse the law."

In his closing remarks, Dr. Mahathir reiterated his openness to scrutiny, emphasizing his commitment to accountability. The former prime minister urged for a fair and unbiased investigation into any allegations, maintaining that he did not abuse the law during his tenure.

Dr. Mahathir went on to express his concerns about the perceived misuse of power within the Malaysian government, pointing to the case of MACC’s chief commissioner as an example. He questioned the integrity of the investigation, stating, “PKR is used to fight against this. Those who are against the government will be investigated, those who are for, even if he has 47 charges against him, will be freed. This is Malaysia under Anwar’s regime.”

Addressing the differences in his own leadership, Dr. Mahathir asserted, "I was a prime minister, but these things didn't happen. Because I didn't abuse the law." He emphasized the importance of upholding justice and fairness in governance, suggesting that the principles he adhered to during his tenure were crucial in preventing the alleged biases seen under the current administration.

In response to the ongoing investigations into his son, Dr. Mahathir expressed frustration, stating, "My son told me that he is being investigated. Everything that he has done for the past 42 years must be proven that he is not involved in corruption. If not, he will be jailed for five years. Just because he is my son." He urged for a fair and impartial assessment of the evidence, questioning the credibility of a system that seemed to target individuals based on their affiliations.

The former prime minister further challenged the government to uphold its commitment to transparency by investigating his financial activities. Dr. Mahathir encouraged authorities to scrutinize his records with agencies such as the Inland Revenue Board and Petronas, stating, "Show me the proof that I stole the Rakyat’s money." His call for transparency echoed his belief that a fair investigation would vindicate him from any allegations of financial impropriety.

As the press conference concluded, Dr. Mahathir reiterated his willingness to cooperate with any investigations, underlining his commitment to accountability and justice. He emphasized that, despite the challenges presented by his title, he remained open to scrutiny and maintained his innocence in matters of corruption. The former prime minister urged the public to scrutinize the government's actions, emphasizing the need for a fair and unbiased legal process in the interest of justice and the well-being of the nation.

Dr. Mahathir's call for accountability did not only resonate in the confines of the press conference but reverberated across the political landscape of Malaysia. As news of his challenge to the current administration spread, citizens and political observers began to engage in a renewed discourse on the principles of justice, transparency, and the fair application of the law.

Supporters of Dr. Mahathir echoed his sentiments on social media platforms, demanding a thorough and impartial investigation into the allegations surrounding not only his son but also into broader concerns of selective prosecution within the government. The hashtag #FairProbeMalaysia started trending, reflecting the public's call for an unbiased examination of individuals, regardless of their political affiliations or titles.

Opposition figures seized upon Dr. Mahathir's comments to further critique the perceived flaws in the current administration's approach to governance. Political rallies and public forums became platforms for dissent, with speakers using Dr. Mahathir's statements as evidence of systemic issues that needed urgent attention.

The ruling government, on the other hand, found itself under increasing pressure to address these allegations and reassure the public of the fairness of its investigative processes. Calls for transparency and accountability reached a crescendo as various sectors of society demanded a clearer understanding of how the government intended to address concerns raised by Dr. Mahathir and others.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was specifically scrutinized, with calls for an internal review of its practices gaining momentum. Questions were raised about the perceived impartiality of the commission, especially in light of Dr. Mahathir's comments regarding the case of Tan Sri Azam Baki's share trading account.

Amidst this growing public discourse, some began to draw parallels between the principles upheld during Dr. Mahathir's tenure as prime minister and the current state of affairs under Anwar Ibrahim's leadership. Debates on the role of the government in safeguarding justice and ensuring equality before the law intensified, prompting a nationwide reflection on the ideals that should guide the nation forward.

As the nation grappled with these issues, the call for a fair and impartial investigation persisted. Dr. Mahathir's challenge had sparked a broader conversation about the fundamental principles that underpin a just and equitable society. Whether these discussions would lead to tangible changes in the nation's governance or serve as a momentary flashpoint in Malaysia's political history remained to be seen. The eyes of the public were now fixed on how the government would respond to the demands for transparency and fairness, hoping that the principles of justice would prevail above all.
