Former Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, hosted a courtesy call today from His Excellency Edil Baisalov, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, at the administrative capital of Putrajaya. The meeting, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, marked the Kyrgyz Deputy Prime Minister's three-day official visit to Malaysia, during which he aimed to gain insights into the Malaysian education system and discuss matters of mutual interest.

H.E Baisalov, in the meeting, provided Dr. Mahathir with an overview of the progress and developments in the Kyrgyz Republic. A significant focus of the visit was H.E Baisalov's keen interest in understanding Malaysia's education system, ranging from primary to tertiary levels. The Kyrgyz delegation had visited educational institutions, including a school in Putrajaya and the University of Malaya (UM), along with a tour of the technology hub, Cyberjaya.

One of the key points of agreement between Dr. Mahathir and H.E Baisalov was their shared perspective on the importance of teaching Science and Mathematics in English. Dr. Mahathir commended the Kyrgyz government's commitment to enhancing its education system, stating, "A good education makes people well-trained and better qualified."

During the meeting, H.E Baisalov also provided insights into the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railroad project, designed to bolster economic growth in Central Asia. Dr. Mahathir emphasized the significance of effective communication and connectivity between countries, citing their pivotal role in fostering international trade relations.

Towards the conclusion of the meeting, H.E Edil Baisalov extended a gracious invitation to Dr. Mahathir from the President of Kyrgyz Republic, H.E Sadyr Japarov, urging the former Prime Minister to visit Kyrgyzstan and witness the progress the country has achieved.

This diplomatic interaction holds historical significance, as Dr. Mahathir recalled his first visit to Kyrgyzstan in July 1996, during his tenure as Prime Minister. The visit was a reciprocal gesture following the official visit to Malaysia by H.E Askar Akayev, the former President of the Kyrgyz Republic, a year earlier.

Diplomatic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia were established in April 1992, leading to the establishment of the Kyrgyz Republic Embassy in 1997. Over the years, bilateral ties have flourished, with notable improvements in trade and economy, investment, cultural exchange, and social cooperation.

The meeting between Dr. Mahathir and H.E Baisalov not only symbolizes the amicable relations between the two nations but also underscores the importance of fostering international cooperation, particularly in the realms of education and economic development. As both countries continue to strengthen their ties, such diplomatic exchanges play a pivotal role in promoting mutual understanding and collaboration on the global stage.
