Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad's recent critique of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership shines a harsh spotlight on the worrying state of Malaysia's economy.

According to Dr. Mahathir, under Anwar's tenure, it seems that political maneuvering has taken precedence over the welfare of the Malaysian people.

Dr. Mahathir's concerns regarding the weakness of the ringgit and rising rice prices are certainly valid. The value of the ringgit plummeting to almost RM5 against 1 US dollar is a matter of grave concern (RM4.73 to be exact as of 6 October).

This devaluation has dire consequences for the purchasing power of everyday Malaysians. Inflation and price hikes have left many struggling to make ends meet, highlighting a stark contrast between the promises made by Anwar and the reality on the ground, Dr. Mahathir said.

Anwar's promise to lower prices for the Rakyat has fallen flat as the Prime Minister presides over an administration that has overseen an increase in rice prices.

According to Dr. Mahathir, the basic necessity of food is becoming unaffordable for many, with some citizens resorting to drastic measures such as suicide due to their inability to put food on the table. This is a tragedy that reflects the failure of leadership in addressing the most basic needs of the people in the country.

Furthermore, Dr. Mahathir's accusation of political posturing taking precedence over the welfare of the nation is concerning. The alliance between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) seems to be primarily aimed at saving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. While politicians engage in behind-the-scenes dealings, ordinary Malaysians bear the brunt of economic hardship and uncertainty.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's leadership has been marred by a series of unmet promises, economic woes, and an apparent prioritization of political interests over the well-being of the Malaysian people.

It is essential for any government to focus on addressing the pressing issues faced by its citizens, rather than engaging in political maneuvering that only deepens the crisis.

Malaysians deserve leadership that places their needs and concerns at the forefront, and it is high time for a course correction before situations deteriorate.
