Focus Malaysia reports on Tun Dr Mahathir’s reminiscence on how Gunung Jerai, a symbol of pride for Kedahans, can match Genting Highlands and Cameron Highlands in terms of its serenity.
The news report discusses the aspirations of former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who, at the age of 98, has expressed his desire to bring economic development to four Malay states, particularly focusing on Kedah.
While Dr. Mahathir's enthusiasm for his home state's potential and his proposal for an international cycling event for Gunung Jerai are noteworthy, but there are several critical points to consider.
Firstly, although remarkable, Dr. Mahathir's advanced age raises questions about his ability to actively drive and oversee ambitious economic initiatives. Successful economic development often requires a dynamic and hands-on approach, which may be challenging for someone of his age. This raises concerns about the practicality and sustainability of his proposals.
Secondly, while his comparison of Gunung Jerai to Genting Highlands and Cameron Highlands is interesting, it lacks concrete plans and feasibility studies. Transforming a natural landmark into a tourist destination requires significant investment and infrastructure development, and it's crucial to evaluate the environmental impact of such endeavours.
However. if it's just about reviving Le Tour de Langkawi, his pet tourism product and relocating it to Gunung Jerai is certainly achievable before Tun Mahathir turns 100.
Additionally, Dr. Mahathir's reference to Kuala Lumpur's development and its expedited approval processes highlights the importance of efficient bureaucracy. However, it's essential to recognize that the context of a capital city's development differs significantly from that of rural states. Kedah and the other mentioned states may face unique challenges and require tailored strategies.
Furthermore, the former prime minister's emphasis on avoiding corruption and ensuring a supportive environment for investors is valid, but it's essential to acknowledge that addressing these issues is a complex and ongoing process. It's not merely a matter of stating intentions but also implementing effective anti-corruption measures and promoting transparency.
In conclusion, while Dr. Mahathir's optimism for Kedah's economic potential and his ideas for development are commendable, a critical analysis reveals the need for more detailed plans, consideration of practical challenges, and recognition of the complexities involved in driving economic growth in these Malay states.
Success will depend on a combination of visionary leadership, effective governance, and sustainable development practices.
