Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad's involvement in guiding the economically backward states of Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, and Perlis under the "State Government 4” (SG4) coalition has raised significant questions about the implications of his influence and connections with major overseas powers.
This development plan, aimed at bringing these states on par with their more developed counterparts on the West Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, is a commendable effort. However, it also warrants a closer look at the potential consequences and challenges.
Dr. Mahathir's extensive experience in governance and his commitment to empowering these states are undoubtedly valuable assets. His emphasis on leadership transformation and the fight against corruption is crucial for economic progress and stability. These states are rich in natural resources and have untapped potential, making them promising areas for development.
The decision to make Dr. Mahathir, an unofficial adviser to the four states under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition, indicates a recognition of his expertise. It reflects a willingness to put aside differences in pursuit of economic development and improved public welfare for these four states under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) collision. This unity is essential for addressing the long-standing issues faced by these states which are not like to get priority treatment from the federal government under PH led by PMX.
However, there are important considerations to keep in mind. First, while Dr. Mahathir's influence can bring attention and resources to these states, overreliance on a single figure may hinder the development of local leadership and institutions.
Sustainable progress requires a diverse and capable leadership cadre that can carry forward the vision beyond one individual. To this end, we are certain that PN has identified cadres to lead enterprises established to attain set goals and objectives.
Second, the involvement of major overseas powers in this development plan should be approached cautiously. While foreign investment and partnerships can be beneficial, they must align with the interests and sovereignty of Malaysia. Transparency and accountability in such arrangements are vital to ensure that they genuinely benefit the local population.
For instance, the race to mine and develop rare earth elements (REE) found in abundance in Kedah ought to be approached with caution to balance power play between demands of the federal government and the intusion of foreign influence.
Furthermore, it's crucial to address the unique challenges each state faces. What works for one may not necessarily work for another due to differing economic structures, demographics, and cultural factors. Tailored approaches and flexibility in policy implementation are essential for success.
In conclusion, Dr. Mahathir's dedication to the development of economically backwards Malay states is a positive step towards reducing regional disparities. However, it is essential to strike a balance between leveraging his experience and nurturing local leadership.
Moreover, vigilance in managing foreign partnerships is critical to safeguard Malaysia's interests. The path to progress for Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan, and Perlis may be challenging, but with the right strategies and a commitment to inclusivity, these states can indeed achieve much needed brilliance in their development.
The magic touch of Tun Dr Mahathir is indeed welcomed by the locals hungry for economic advancement, desperately wanting to be on par with the other rich states on the Malay Peninsular.
