Drink-driving: Man jailed, fined RM10k

Kota Kinabalu: The Traffic Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to a day’s jail and ordered him to pay a fine of RM10,000 or three months for drink-driving.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie meted out the sentence to Adrian Lee, 27, after he admitted committing the offence while driving a vehicle at 1.29am on Feb 2, this year at Jalan Lintas here.

The charge, under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport (Amendment) Act 2020, provides for a jail term of up to two years and a fine between RM10,000 and RM30,000, on conviction.

Lee requested leniency.

Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man was fined RM800 or one week in jail for having gambling paraphernalia.

Syamri Suharto pleaded guilty to purchasing lottery tickets without a licence at 11.20am on March 22 in Donggongon town, Penampang.

He was charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act which carries a jail term of up to six months, or a fine of up to RM3,000, or both, on conviction.

Magistrate Stephanie was informed by the prosecution that Syamri was arrested by police, who found illegal gambling paraphernalia on him.

The police also seized RM20 cash from Syamri, said the prosecution.

Syamri requested a lenient sentence while the prosecution applied for an adequate jail term.

The Magistrate granted the prosecution’s application for the seized money to be forfeited as a government revenue.
